About Theatre Macon

Theatre Macon was established in 1985 to provide patrons with the opportunity to see theatrical productions at a reasonable cost, to provide members of the community with the opportunity to act in and assist with the production of plays, and to experiment with and present new plays and play forms in keeping with modern drama trends. The theatre also exists to provide education and training in developing interests and skills in plays, play writing, play acting, and production techniques and to provide an opportunity for apprenticeship in community theatre operation to interested persons.

We are located in historic downtown Macon, Georgia in the old Ritz Theater building on Cherry Street. Our theater offers one of the most intimate performance spaces in the area.  We produce six major productions each year in our regular season, featuring material which includes comedy, drama and musicals, both classic and recently written.  We also present at least one major summer show, usually a major musical. We hold open auditions for all of our productions.

Our Youth Actors Company was started to provide the youth of Middle Georgia with the opportunity to pursue their interests in the theatre arts.  The company produces three productions each year.  They also hold open auditions for all of their plays, which are open to youth 12 - 18 years of age.

If you are interested in becoming involved in community theatre, we are always looking for new people to volunteer.  Whether it is acting, building sets, working backstage, or managing the house, we have something that you can do.  Simply call the theatre for more information. We are more than a community theatre -- we're a family!  At Theatre Macon, we not only make magic--we have learned to celebrate life!  Here we come together to laugh, to love, to dance, to sing, and to live! At Theatre Macon you can make new lifelong friends! Here you will meet interesting people from all ages, from all walks of life, with many different interests. Come and join us!

Jim Crisp, Jr., Founder & Artistic Director

Jim Crisp, Artistic Director of Theatre Macon, will be celebrating his thirtieth year in Macon in August, 2012. Having lived the life of a "gypsy" all over the United States, he is happy to have finally made his home in a place as great as Macon.im earned a B.A. in theatre from Western Illinois University and his M.F.A. in acting from the FSU / Asolo conservatory in Sarasota, Florida. He lived in New York City for two years and Los Angeles for four years teaching, directing, acting and pursuing the illusive actor’s career. Jim arrived in Macon in 1982 to become director at the Macon Little Theatre during their fiftieth season celebration. In 1986, with a lot of help and support from friends and the community of Macon, he founded Theatre Macon, now in its twenty-sixth season. He is proud of Theatre Macon’s accomplishments which have brought state and regional recognition to the theatre. In addition, many of their Youth Actor’s Company graduates are working and studying professionally. His life’s work has largely been dedicated to recognizing and developing young talent. Jim has directed over 250 productions in his career and continues to search for new works that will entertain and challenge his audiences.
