About Theatre Macon
Our History
Theatre Macon was founded in 1986 to provide patrons with the opportunity to see theatrical productions at a reasonable cost, to provide members of the community with the opportunity to act in and assist with the production of plays, and to experiment with and present new plays and play forms in keeping with modern drama trends. The theatre also exists to provide education and training in developing interests and skills in performance, playwriting, and production techniques. The theatre also exists to provide an opportunity for apprenticeship in community theatre operation to interested persons.
Located in historic Macon, Georgia, Theatre Macon operates in the old Ritz Theater building downtown on Cherry Street. Our theater offers one of the most intimate performance venues in the area. Each year we produce eleven full-length productions; including four Mainstage productions, two Youth Artists' Company productions, four Stage 2 Series productions, and one major summer production. Our Theatre provides diverse seasons spanning a large variety of genres including comedy, drama, musical, classical, and new productions. All auditions and technical positions are open and posted on the audition page of our website.
Youth Artists' Company
The Theatre Macon Youth Actors' Company was established in 1988 to provide Middle Georgia youth with the opportunity to practice and grow their talents in theatre arts. The company produces two to three full-length productions each year which may include musicals, dramas, or comedies. Open auditions are held for all productions. Youth currently in grades 5-12 in a public, private, or homeschool are invited and encouraged to attend. Occasionally, we also offer theatre workshops specifically geared toward increasing the depth knowledge our youth artists have in theatre related fields.
In 2019, the Youth Actors' Company was renamed to the Youth Artists' Company as the program had grown to include a variety of artists including actors, technicians, and musicians.
Stage 2 Series
Theatre Macon Education was established in 2020 to provide our diverse communities with the space and opportunity to increase their knowledge of theatre arts and theatre arts related fields. This program is designed to meet the education needs of adults and youth in our community and to provide a safe space for artists to learn and explore their interests.
The Theatre Macon Stage 2 Series was established as an incubator for local talent. These four annual productions bring the best of Central Georgia Artists to Theatre Macon's stage. Stage 2 Series productions are produced by Theatre Macon, but directed by community members. These four productions offer the opportunity for many different types of performance art to be featured at Theatre Macon to include (but not limited to) staged readings, musical reviews, small plays or musicals, and a variety of other outlets which encourage members of our community to work together to create exciting, thought-provoking theatrical works of art. Submissions for the Stage 2 Series open around the first of the year. Contact the Theatre Office for more information.
